Current Events I
From rapper to President.
In
this post, I would like to talk about a rapper like Kanye West. He
clearly influenced the modern music industry as a musician, producer,
and even designer. The total sales of his albums and singles in
digital format and on physical media exceeded 121 million copies.
West has won 21 Grammy awards, making him one of the record holders
for the number of nominations won and a record holder among hip-hop
musicians, as well as artists of his age. It would seem, where even
further?
However, he knows how to surprise. In 2020, Kanye West wowed everyone with his desire to run for President of America. Having let a man's stingy tear at a campaign rally, speaking about the issue of abortion and the life of the African-American part of the American population, Kanye tried to show his serious intentions.
Many considered the rapper's move a simple pursuit of another hype.
The problem here is very simple. A person who has achieved great results in his field, feeling the support of millions of people behind him, begins to think that he will be lucky in politics as well. Having no political experience or even education behind him, a man like still decides to take a frankly risky step. Perhaps he really thinks he knows what the people of America need, or perhaps this is another attempt to attract attention to himself. Kanye West has repeatedly made provocative statements and shocked his audience with sharp antics.
But the cloudless thoughts of the presidency quickly passed. Very soon, in an interview with Forbes magazine, Kanye admitted his defeat and agreed with the journalist's opinion that his participation was necessary in order to lure the votes of African-Americans from the former Vice President of the United States, the likely candidate from the Democratic party, Joseph Biden, and reduce his chances of winning.
In conclusion, I want to ask a question. Whether musicians, actors or just popular people who feel a great deal of its influence on people to get involved in politics? Yes, perhaps at the first stages of the political process, this is quite appropriate, an example of this is Arnold Schwarzenegger. But are these attempts Relevant at more serious levels? Can a rapper or actor ever become President? Let's wait and see!

Alex, you could'nt have chosen better example than Kanye West in connection with your topic of choice. I absolutely agree with the way you described this event - does not matter whether he did it because he actually believed he is the person Americans need to lead them right now or whether this was just publicity stunt done to generate hype and bring more income - all he did was take votes from actual candidates which literally made their votes completely useless. Sometimes it seems that celebrities have no boundaries.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea that Kanye West was taken seriously as a presidential candidate (by some) to begin with is a testament to how dire the situation has become in The U.S. The presidential elections, meant to find the next leader of the free world, have, over the past few decades, turned into an all-or-nothing popularity contest (emphasis on the 'pop'). Based on Kanye West's antics in the past, I'm fairly confident that his presidential run was just a publicity stunt. The facts that he has an album on the way only strengthens my argument. One can't really fault some people for eating it up though, the man is, after all, a marketing genius who's named Steve Jobs as one of his biggest inspirations. His 'mad artistic genius' persona may have taken him to great heights in the music and fashion industries, but he's playing a very dangerous game by trying to influence opinions on serious topics like abortion for his own financial gain with crocodile tears.
